Early Intervention for
High-Risk Infants

The first months of life are crucial, especially if your baby had a difficult start. Our Early Intervention services for high-risk infants are designed to support families of babies born prematurely or with medical complications. We know how overwhelming it can be to bring home a fragile infant after a NICU stay or to monitor a baby who might be at risk for developmental delays. At Polkadot Sparrow, we offer compassionate, knowledgeable guidance to give your baby the best start possible – and to give you peace of mind.

Who It’s For

This service is tailored for infants and toddlers who are considered “high-risk” for developmental challenges. This includes babies born preterm (premature infants), those with low birth weight or who experienced complications at birth (such as lack of oxygen or neonatal surgery), infants with genetic conditions or congenital issues, or babies who have spent time in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Additionally, infants born to mothers who had health challenges (like maternal diabetes, hypertension, or substance exposure) might benefit. Essentially, if a pediatrician has recommended early intervention, or if as a parent you sense your baby is “not keeping up” with typical milestones (rolling, sitting, babbling, etc.), our early intervention OT services are appropriate. We also welcome referrals for infants who might have subtle signs – for example, stiffness, floppy muscles, feeding difficulties, or extreme irritability – even if they don’t have a formal diagnosis yet.

What to Expect

Early intervention is very family-centered and often takes place in a natural environment for your baby. We can see you at our clinic or even arrange home visits (or virtual consultations) if needed to observe your baby in their comfortable space. Initially, we’ll do a thorough yet gentle assessment: this might involve simply observing your baby’s spontaneous movements and posture, checking reflexes, and seeing how they respond to visual or auditory stimuli. One of the tools we use is the General Movements Assessment (GMA) – which is basically watching a young infant’s movement patterns (like how they wiggle or kick) to catch any early signs that the nervous system might be under stress. Don’t worry, this is done by observation or a video – no invasive tests for your little one. We also ask you lots of questions about feeding, sleeping, and any concerns you have. Based on what we find, we’ll work with you on a plan that might include routine-based developmental activities. For example, we might teach you specific tummy-time techniques to strengthen your baby’s neck and trunk, or infant massage strokes to help with muscle tone and bonding. If your baby has trouble with feeding (common in preemies), our OT can help with positioning, bottle/nipple selection, or oral-motor exercises to improve sucking and swallowing. Every baby is different: one high-risk infant might need help loosening tight muscles in their shoulders to eventually crawl, while another needs stimulation to improve visual tracking or sound response. We often also focus on sensory exposure – tiny preemies sometimes have sensory sensitivities, so we guide you on how to introduce sounds, lights, and touch in a calming way. Sessions will feel like play or cuddle time: maybe we’ll sing while doing gentle stretches, or use a play mat with interesting toys to encourage reaching. Crucially, parents/caregivers are the key players – we coach you during each session so you feel confident supporting your baby’s development during daily routines (diapering, feeding, playtime, etc.).

How It Helps

Early intervention can make a life-changing difference for high-risk infants. By addressing potential issues as early as possible, we can often prevent or minimize delays. Many families we support see their babies catch up to peers by toddlerhood in areas like motor skills, language, or social interaction. For example, an infant born 2 months early who wasn’t rolling or babbling on time, after a few months of early intervention, might fully catch up in those milestones. Even when a child continues to have challenges (like a diagnosed cerebral palsy or developmental disability), the therapy done in infancy can significantly improve their outcomes – perhaps they learn an alternate way to move that maximizes their abilities, or avoid developing a fixed contracture due to early range-of-motion play. Parents often report feeling empowered and less anxious because they know how to help their baby and they have a professional guiding them. We also provide emotional support – having a high-risk infant can be stressful, and we’re here to celebrate progress with you and troubleshoot any setbacks. In addition, early intervention connects you with resources: we can refer you to specialists (like vision/hearing services, or speech therapy down the line) if needed and help you navigate processes like Early Childhood Intervention programs or support groups in the Durban area. Ultimately, our aim is that by the time your baby reaches preschool age, they will have benefitted from every possible opportunity to grow and thrive, and you will have the confidence that you gave them that strong foundation. In short: we help your tiny fighters grow into strong, capable children, while supporting you as a family from the very start.
