Pregnancy & Postpartum Support

Motherhood is a journey filled with joy, but it can also bring unexpected challenges – both physical and emotional. Our Pregnancy & Postpartum Support service is here to help mothers (and mothers-to-be) navigate those challenges with holistic occupational therapy care. Whether you’re an expectant mom dealing with body changes and stress, or a new mom struggling to balance recovery, baby care, and your own well-being, our team provides guidance and therapeutic strategies so you can thrive during this phase of life. We focus on “mom-centered” care, because a healthier, happier mom is the best foundation for a healthy, happy baby.

Who It’s For

This service is aimed at women during pregnancy and up to the first year after childbirth (postpartum), though we can extend beyond a year if issues persist. You might reach out to us if: you’re pregnant and experiencing discomforts that affect daily function (e.g., back pain, pelvic pain making it hard to work or sleep), or you have conditions like pregnancy-related carpal tunnel (wrist pain/numbness) or swelling that affect your hand function. Perhaps you want advice on workplace ergonomics or adjustments during pregnancy – like how to safely continue your job or when to modify tasks. Postpartum, many moms seek our help for things like de Quervain’s tenosynovitis (wrist/thumb pain from lifting the baby, often called “mommy thumb”), general deconditioning or core weakness after delivery, or scar management (from C-section or tearing). We also support moms experiencing postnatal depression or anxiety, in collaboration with mental health professionals – our role might be to help establish routines, self-care, and bonding activities. If you had a baby in the NICU or your infant has special needs, you as a mom might be overwhelmed and need guidance on caring for baby plus caring for yourself (this dovetails with our early intervention services, but with a focus on maternal well-being). Additionally, mothers of multiples (twins, etc.) or moms returning to work and trying to juggle pumping, baby’s schedule, and their own recovery can benefit. Essentially, any mother who feels “I’m not coping with something in my daily life now that I’m pregnant/have a baby” – be it physical pain, fatigue, time management, emotional burnout, or difficulty in occupations like feeding or soothing the baby – is someone we can help through OT.

What to Expect

Our approach is very personalized and compassionate. In an initial session, we’ll talk about what you’re experiencing. For a pregnant client, we’ll ask about your typical day, any pain or issues, your sleep, preparation for baby, etc. For a new mom, we’ll discuss how recovery is going, what a day with baby looks like, what activities are hard now (like lifting baby in and out of the crib, or finding time to shower, or managing anxiety). Depending on your needs, sessions can include: Physical strategies – for example, if you have back or pelvic pain, we might teach safe body mechanics for baby care (how to lift the baby without straining, exercises to strengthen your core muscles gently, tips for comfortable breastfeeding postures). We could provide splints or adaptive techniques for wrist pain (like how to hold baby differently, or use a pillow to support your arms). If you’re pregnant and still working, we’ll discuss ergonomic setups or perhaps schedule modifications to reduce fatigue; we might even liaise with your employer on your behalf if you wish. Energy conservation and routine management are big parts postpartum: we help you map out a daily routine that includes time for baby care, but also rest and small self-care breaks. Sometimes just learning how to nap when baby naps, or to alternate duties with a partner, can be transformative – we coach you on these lifestyle adjustments. Emotional support and coping – while we are not psychologists, as OTs we can offer practical techniques for managing stress and mood. This might involve relaxation techniques, establishing a simple meditation or journaling habit, or connecting you with support groups (maybe a moms & babies group in Hillcrest for social support). We often incorporate infant development guidance too: many moms worry if they’re doing things “right” for their baby. We can teach you developmental play activities to bond and help baby’s progress (which also builds maternal confidence). If breastfeeding is causing ergonomic issues or stress, we’ll address positions or alternatives (we might refer to a lactation consultant for specialized help, but handle the daily routine angle ourselves). We can also assist with sensory strategies if you or baby are having trouble (some moms get sensory overload from constant touch and sound – we can suggest breaks and calming sensory outlets, and also ways to soothe a fussy baby through swaddling, rocking, etc.). Home safety and modification can come in: for example, making sure your home is set up to minimize bending (maybe a changing station at a good height), or that you have a comfortable corner for feeding with necessary items within reach.

How It Helps

Our pregnancy and postpartum OT services aim to reduce the physical strain and mental stress on moms, thus improving both mom’s and baby’s well-being. Physically, you may find that with our ergonomic tips and exercises, those persistent aches (back, wrists, neck from nursing) start to diminish, allowing you to care for your baby with less pain. We’ve had clients who, after a couple of sessions, say “I can finally lift my baby without that stabbing pain,” or “Using the baby carrier this new way you showed me has saved my back.” Functionally, you might start managing your day more smoothly – figuring out how to get a shower while baby is secure, or preparing quick meals with one hand, or organizing baby supplies so nights are easier. For moms who felt overwhelmed, often the biggest change is a sense of empowerment and balance. By learning time management strategies and giving themselves permission for self-care, they report feeling more in control and less anxious. Perhaps you’ll adopt a daily walk with the stroller as both exercise and mental clearing time – we consider those kinds of healthy routines as “occupations” important for your health. If postpartum depression or anxiety is present, our interventions (in concert with medical treatment) help break isolation and create structure, which are known to aid mood. Engaging in pleasurable activities (maybe a short crafting task during baby’s nap, or baby-and-mom music class) as we might recommend can lift spirits. Also, by improving baby’s regulation through our sensory soothing tips, moms often get more sleep and less crying to deal with, which is a huge relief. Our support essentially fills a gap where standard postnatal care might not delve – we look at you as a whole person, not just a patient at a 6-week check-up. The value is evident when mothers say things like, “I didn’t know OT could help with this – every new mom should have this guidance!” You’ll also come away with resources – perhaps a simple home exercise program, or referrals to a pelvic floor physio or mom-and-baby class if needed, so your support network grows. In essence, this service nurtures the nurturer. By caring for the caregiver (the mother), we indirectly improve outcomes for the baby and the whole family. You deserve to enjoy motherhood and recover fully; our occupational therapy ensures you get the help to do just that, from bump to baby and beyond.
