Mentorship & Professional Training
At Polkadot Sparrow, our commitment to growth and learning extends beyond our clients – we’re also passionate about supporting the next generation of therapists, educators, and healthcare professionals. Our Mentorship & Professional Training programs provide valuable guidance, education, and skill-building for fellow occupational therapists, therapy students, teachers, and even corporate teams looking to become more inclusive. Led by our founders (both experienced educators and leaders in OT), we offer one-on-one mentorship, group workshops, and custom training sessions, all grounded in the latest research and best practices. Think of us as a resource and partner for professionals seeking to elevate their knowledge or solve tricky cases with expert insight.

Who It’s For
This service is tailored to various professionals:
- Occupational Therapists (OTs) and OT Students: If you’re a new graduate or an OT looking to specialize, we provide mentorship in areas like pediatric therapy, sensory integration, neurodevelopmental treatment, neonatal OT, and medico-legal work. Community service therapists (those in their compulsory year in South Africa) often reach out for guidance on managing caseloads or developing programs. OT students can seek extra tutoring or hands-on observation opportunities to supplement their university training.
- Other Therapists & Health Professionals: Physiotherapists, speech therapists, or psychologists who want to learn more about integrative approaches or about OT-specific frameworks (like sensory strategies) would benefit from our workshops. For example, a speech therapist might attend our training on sensory processing to better understand their clients with autism.
- School Teachers and Special Educators: We offer training for educators on topics such as identifying children who may need OT, implementing sensory-friendly classrooms, fine motor skill development for handwriting, and strategies to help kids with attention or self-regulation in class. Schools in the Durban and Hillcrest area can request in-service training sessions.
- Company HR and Workplace Managers: We also extend our training to workplaces, teaching management and HR teams about accommodating employees with disabilities, ergonomic injury prevention, or mental health wellness at work. (For example, a corporate client might hire us to do a seminar on setting up ergonomic home workstations or on fostering neurodiversity inclusion in the workplace.)
- Parents and Caregivers (in a professional capacity): Sometimes we run “parent workshops” or group talks on topics like sensory processing, child development, or strategies for homework time – empowering parents with knowledge in a semi-professional seminar format. These might be organized via schools or community groups.

Essentially, if you are keen to learn and improve your practice or environment in any area related to occupational therapy or developmental support, our mentorship and training services are for you.
What to Expect
Our Mentorship for individual therapists typically starts with a consultation to understand your goals. For instance, if you’re an OT wanting mentorship in sensory integration, we’ll likely schedule regular sessions (perhaps monthly or bi-weekly) where we can discuss client cases, review treatment plans, and delve into theory-to-practice topics. These can be in-person or via video call for convenience. We often use real-case discussions (with respect to confidentiality) – you might bring a challenging case and we brainstorm assessment and intervention ideas together. We’ll share resources (articles, protocols) and may even invite you to observe some of our sessions if feasible (shadowing opportunities at our Hillcrest clinic for local therapists, with client permission). If you need to fulfill mentorship hours for a certification (like SAISI sensory integration training which requires mentorship), our mentors can sign off on those provided the criteria are met. We also provide guidance in professional skills: for new grads, we can help with time management, report writing refinement, or how to communicate with teachers and parents effectively.
Our Professional Training workshops are usually formatted as half-day or full-day seminars, or a series of shorter workshops. These can be hosted at our clinic, on-site at a school or company, or even via webinar. Depending on the topic, you’ll receive engaging presentations, hands-on activities, and take-home materials. For example, a teacher workshop on “Sensory Strategies in the Classroom” might include a brief simulation of sensory overload, a show-and-tell of DIY sensory tools, and collaborative planning where teachers outline a sensory-friendly change they’ll try in their class. Corporate trainings might involve demonstrating proper lifting techniques and then having participants practice under our guidance, or discussing case studies of successful workplace accommodations. We ensure evidence-informed content: our slides or handouts often include key research insights (presented in approachable terms) along with practical tips. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences – we value an interactive learning environment.

Additionally, we may develop online resources or short courses. For instance, an e-learning module for therapists on “Assessing School Readiness” or a downloadable PDF guide for teachers on fine motor activities. We are exploring offering some short courses that professionals can do at their own pace, with the option to follow up in a live Q&A session.

How It Helps
Our mentorship and training services aim to raise the standard of care across our professional community and indirectly benefit countless children and adults through the improved skills of those we train. If you’re an OT under mentorship, you’ll gain confidence in your clinical reasoning and expand your toolkit of techniques. Mentees often tell us that having an experienced colleague to bounce ideas off prevented burnout and improved their outcomes – for example, one mentee might say, “The feeding strategies you taught me turned around a case that I was really stuck on.” You’ll also stay updated on current evidence, since we integrate new research findings into discussions (important in a field that evolves). For professionals attending our workshops, the immediate benefit is practical knowledge. Teachers who attend our training can often implement changes the very next day – maybe rearranging their classroom seating for a child with ADHD or using a new pencil grip technique for kids with poor handwriting. The feedback from schools might be along the lines of “We saw a decrease in classroom disruptions after we set up that ‘sensory corner’ as you suggested.” For companies, the impact can be reduced workplace injuries and happier employees; an HR manager might note “After the ergonomics training, we had far fewer complaints of back pain, and productivity has even improved.”

Another subtle but important outcome is networking and community-building. Professionals who engage with us become part of a network – we often introduce therapists to one another, fostering peer support. This is especially helpful for those practicing in more isolated settings like rural KZN, who might join our virtual trainings to feel connected to a larger community of practice. Mentees and workshop attendees know they can reach back out with questions as they apply what they learned – we’re approachable and invested in their success. Moreover, by training others, we indirectly enhance Polkadot Sparrow’s mission: our ethos of research-informed, compassionate care spreads wider, as those we train adopt these values in their own work. We consider it a great success when something we’ve taught gets passed along and multiplied. For example, if we mentor a therapist in early intervention techniques, and they then better serve dozens of high-risk infants in their hospital, our influence has magnified beyond our own clinic’s walls.

In short, through mentorship and professional training at Polkadot Sparrow, you get expert guidance, cutting-edge knowledge, and personalized support that can elevate your professional practice or educational environment. It’s about growing together as a community of helpers so that ultimately, children, families, and individuals all receive the best care and support possible.
